How much money do you need to move to NYC?

A practical way to estimate upfront housing, moving, and reserve costs before relocating to New York City.

Separate monthly cost from move-in cash

Your monthly housing ceiling and the cash needed before move-in are different numbers. Build a worksheet for the first month's rent or purchase funds, security deposit, moving expenses, utility setup, and temporary lodging.

Price the physical move

Compare movers, packing, storage, insurance, elevator reservations, certificates of insurance, and building move fees. Ask both buildings about permitted hours before choosing a date.

Protect a transition reserve

Keep a separate reserve for delays, replacement purchases, transportation, meals, and overlapping housing. The right amount depends on income stability and the complexity of the move.

Use three scenarios

Create lean, expected, and high-cost versions of the plan. If only the lean scenario works, reconsider the date, location, or housing target before committing.
